Nyamache Seed of Hope

Nyamache is an exciting place to visit. It is a small place on the outskirts of Kisii town in Western Kenya. It is also the location of our second Seed of Hope Centre. Nyamache is run in partnership with and fully funded by the UK Registered Charity ‘Boo’. Although financed by Boo, it is fully integrated into the Vision Africa Seed of Hope programme.

As you travel through Kisii town and onto Nyamache you can see so many children crushed under the weight of poverty.  Children with babies on their backs, shamelessly rummaging through piles of rubbish for food, or for something to sell, or for something to play with.  These are children deprived of education, deprived of a decent standard of living, often deprived of love and hope and certainly deprived of a bright future.

You can see young girls, not yet fifteen years old, walking for miles with firewood piled on their heads, or carrying water to the family home, or with sacks of vegetables balanced on their backs to be sold at the market, when they should be in school.  You see many youngsters who have been kept home from school so that they can cultivate the family’s crops.  They will dig and plant for the entire day, more often than not without sufficient nourishment or water.

Every day is a struggle for survival and education often comes low on the list of priorities, after tasks such as finding food, sustaining shelter, looking after younger siblings, caring for sickly relatives and any attempt to earn money for the family.  Secondary education can be a very expensive venture in Kenya , and for the majority of children in such poverty stricken areas it is a mere dream.

Nyamache Seed of Hope was created to give these teenagers the possibility of a brighter future.  As in all our centres, the syllabus covers three main areas of training – Life skills, Vocational skills and Micro-business skills. The combination of these skills makes it possible for the students to become independent when they graduate.  We also provide counseling and development of self-esteem, without which a student will never reach their potential.
